(The Center Square) — Twelve wildfires are burning in Nevada, but good news came Monday with full containment of the mammoth Conner Fire. At 17,714 acres, the blaze just south of Carson City in Douglas County is the largest fire so far this year in the Silver State. “It’s very dry and hot out there,” federal Bureau of Land Management spokesperson Lisa Ross told The Center Square as she discussed the Conner Fire. The blaze was described as fully contained Monday morning by the Nevada Fire Info website. The other fires are mostly along Interstate 80. A Red Flag Warning has been issued across Central Nevada. “Most of our wildfires are human-caused, so just be as careful as you can and take the right precautions," Ross said at the BLM's Carson City office. "Have a shovel and water, in case you do have a fire. The National Weather Service said winds are expected between 20 and 35 mph, which means critical fire conditions. “A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity values, and hot temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior,” said the National Weather Service warning. Dangerous fire-prone weather conditions heading into July Fourth celebrations may remind Nevadans of the 2018 Martin Fire. It blazed across over 400,000 acres. (The Center Square) – President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday to end decades-old economic sanctions on Syria in “an effort to promote and support the country’s path to stability and peace,” according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “This order supports United States national security and foreign policy goals by directing additional actions, including the removal of sanctions on Syria, the issuance of waivers that permit the relaxation of export controls and other restrictions on Syria, and other actions,” the order reads. The U.S. is lifting the sanctions because Syria is in a better place politically than it was just six months ago, according to the order, due to the regime change that took place just before Trump took office for the second time. The former president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, succeeded his father and ruled the country from 2000 until December of last year, when he left the country fleeing from rebel forces that had risen against his authoritarian regime. The order also says there have been positive developments in the country in recent months under the president of its new interim government, Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former Al-Qaeda affiliate who was behind the forces that drove out Assad. Sharaa publicly cut ties with the terrorist organization in 2016 and has remained a dominant figure in both the Syrian Civil War, which is still ongoing, and the political dynamics of Syria for more than a decade. Trump and Sharaa’s meeting in May during Trump’s visit to the Middle East was the first of its kind between the two countries in 25 years. The order does not remove all sanctions, however. “The order will remove sanctions on Syria, while maintaining sanctions on the former President Assad, his associates, human rights abusers, drug traffickers, persons linked to chemical weapons activities, ISIS and their affiliates and Iranian proxies,” Leavitt told reporters Monday. On Thursday, Leavitt said that the administration’s hope was to see Syria join the Abraham Accords, a series of agreements brokered under the first Trump administration normalizing relations between Israel, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Sudan and Morocco.

A cerimônia nacional de premiação da 19ª Olimpíada Brasileira de Matemática das Escolas Públicas (OBMEP) entregou nesta segunda-feira (30) medalhas para 8.496 estudantes de instituições públicas e privadas. Outros 51.002 estudantes receberam certificados de menção honrosa. Houve representantes de 5.564 municípios brasileiros (99,9%), de todas as unidades federativas. Na divisão por tipo de instituição, 500 estudantes das escolas públicas conquistaram medalhas de ouro, enquanto 183 foram para a rede privada. Entre os estados, São Paulo teve o maior número de medalhas de ouro (158), seguido de Minas Gerais (93) e Rio Grande do Sul (71). Segundo o Ministério da Educação (MEC), a olimpíada deste ano teve recorde de participação, com mais de 18,5 milhões de estudantes. O evento, que ocorreu em um hotel da Zona Oeste do Rio de Janeiro, é promovido pelo Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA). “Esse é um caso de sucesso. Não à toa há milhões de meninos e meninas que participam. E a gente quer mais é garantir que isso transforme a vida dessas crianças. É um esforço enorme das famílias que se envolvem nessa maratona, em que os alunos se apaixonam e vão em busca desse aprendizado”, disse a ministra da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação Luciana Santos. “A matemática não é nenhum bicho papão. É algo acessível desde que a gente consiga criar métodos e estímulos que aproximem ciências que parecem complexas, mas que toda pessoa tem a possibilidade de aprender”, complementou. Os medalhistas serão convidados a participar do Programa de Iniciação Científica Júnior (PIC), e poderão aprofundar conhecimentos em matemática. Integrantes das escolas públicas terão direito a bolsa de R$ 300. “Esse é um exemplo de política pública adotada pelo governo federal, que, depois de 20 anos, claramente é uma política de sucesso, que está mudando vidas de jovens de todo o país e que está pronta para mais 20 anos de sucesso”, disse o diretor-geral do IMPA Marcelo Viana. Novo programa O ministro da Educação, Camilo Santana, anunciou, durante o evento, o lançamento do programa Compromisso Nacional Toda Matemática. Por meio dele, o governo federal pretende estimular ações que melhorem a qualidade do ensino de matemática e o desempenho dos estudantes. “Sabemos das dificuldades que a rede pública tem no aprendizado de matemática. O último Pisa [Programa Internacional de Avaliação de Estudantes] mostrou que mais de 70% dos alunos com 15 anos que fazem a prova não têm aprendizagem adequada. Imagine o desafio que temos no Brasil? Vamos, agora, lançar esse programa para apoiar a formação de professores, e ajudar técnica e financeiramente as redes de ensino básicas”, disse o ministro. Santana disse que ouviu professores, dirigentes escolares e secretários de educação para formular o programa. E que o MEC pretende reduzir desigualdades regionais e articular os sistemas de avaliação educacional da educação básica para a tomada de decisões nas redes de ensino.
